Milky Way Shows 84 Million Stars in 9 Billion Pixels

Side Note: The two images shown above are mere crop outs from ESA’s recent hit: The 9 Billion Pixel Image of 84 Million Stars. These two focus on the bright center of the image for the purpose of highlighting what a peak at 84,000,000 stars looks like.

Astronomers at the European Southern Observatory’s Paranal Observatory in Chile have released a breathtaking new photograph showing the central area of our Milky Way galaxy. The photograph shows a whopping 84 million stars in an image measuring 108500×81500, which contains nearly 9 billion pixels.

It’s actually a composite of thousands of individual photographs shot with the observatory’s VISTA survey telescope, the same camera that captured the amazing 55-hour exposure. Three different infrared filters were used to capture the different details present in the final image.

The VISTA’s camera is sensitive to infrared light, which allows its vision to pierce through much of the space dust that blocks the view of ordinary optical telescope/camera systems.

This is an article I wrote for my school paper to spread the word about Hannibal. It focuses on the role of violence in the show and discusses it in the context of several characters (mostly Will Graham) who are affected by it.

As 2013 opened, American viewers developed a sudden taste for blood, with a glut of new serial-killer dramas taking over the airwaves. FOX’s The Following provided gore and spectacle in spades and was rewarded for its carnage with the crown for the season’s top freshman drama (and FOX’s biggest drama hit in years). Cable network A&E made waves with Bates Motel, a prequel to the events of Psycho, one of the best-known horror films in history. Last but not least, NBC launched a prequel of its own: Hannibal, a look into the relationship between FBI profiler Will Graham and the titular cannibalistic serial killer that spawned a series of wildly successful novels and films.

Yet while both The Following and Bates Motel are hits (at least for now) for their respective networks, Hannibal has failed to catch on: a shame, as it’s easily the most deserving of an audience. The name brand may be its selling point, but it’s also an entrance into an impressively nuanced and emotional treatment of violence unlike anything on the small screen right now.
